Making progress!

It's taken a while, But i'm slowly making progress. That's the chain of granny squares. I have 6--24 more to go!! If I make 4 more today, that puts me at 20. Five squares a day, and I'll be done in 4 days!!! WOOHOO!!! Scarf 1: 20% complete.

I've got a few pattern ideas for scarves 2 & 3. I know, I know...but I like to think ahead. :-)

There's this neat zig-zag scarf. I remember how to crochet in zig-zags. My aunt taught me a few years ago. At least I think I remember...

And then there's this thermal scarf. I figured it would be extra warm. And it looks easy enough.

Does anyone know how to crochet cables? I would love to learn but I don't feel like buying a cable needle. That's too
complicated. I have a feeling it's front post stitch, or something. E-mail me: ayearofscarves@ymail.com.

Good morning, good morning...

*Yawn...*

I woke up about a half hour ago. I don't know why, because I'm still yawning. Isn't your body supposed to wake up only after it's had enough rest? Well, whatever.

I was able to crochet one last granny square (at 1:00 am last night) before I couldn't keep my eyes open. That puts me at, drumroll pleeeeeease...

2. Two granny squares.

*Sigh.* I know, I know. But today is a new day! Today is August 26! YEAH!

My First Granny Square

Yep, it's true. My very first granny square! In all my thirteen years, never have I seen such a beautiful sight as this granny square.

But, as we all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

It only took a good 45 minutes. But I followed a pattern (and a very good one at that, check it out.) so it was a lot of "Are you sure it's 'chain 3', not 'chain 2'?" and double checking and messing up. But the point is, I CAN NOW CROCHET A GRANNY SQUARE!

Only 29 more, and viola...Scarf 1 will be born. I believe it may take a while, but it's do-able. By the way, I have decided on a charity. It's perfect. It's wonderful. It's a local soup kitchen. That way, people can come in for a nice, warm meal, and not only leave with a full stomach--a nice warm scarf to protect them from the elements! I would love to oversee the event, but I'm not sure if that would be weird...

Does anyone out there have any color suggestions? Man, I'm stumped. One suggestion was grey, navy, and white, which can work. I plan on making a few all-black scarves. How can you go wrong there? Maybe a nice coffee or dark chocolate. Sounds like Starbucks. :-)

Hello, World!

Ok, so this is my first post. The first of many.

My goal is to crochet a scarf (I prefer crocheting to knitting. Thanks, Chuchi Lynn!) a week. By the end of the year, I should hvae at least 52 scarves to donate to a needy cause, like a rescue mission.

I am doing this extensive community service for a few reasons: first and foremost, my Girl Scout Silver Award. I only have one year left to earn it. And with only 40 hours of service to accomplish, this year-long project should be a cinch. Maybe.

Second, I really love helping people. I wish I could somehow stitch a hug into every scarf. But I think what I'm doing is just enough: keeping those who need our help nice and warm for the winter (I think we're due for a harsh one in '10).

Third, because crocheting is what I love to do. It's a hobby. And what's better than doing something you love AND helping others? Nothing, I say!!

I'll be starting soon. Right now, I'm knitting/crocheting all my Christmas gifts, which will put a slight delay on my project.

But I promise to start as soon as possible.
